[Update] AVG Free - Major Update - Wish I Knew Why They Do This On A Friday Afternoon!

What happened last weekend?

After updating virus definitions last friday if you rebooted, your
computer blue screened, and it didn't get fixed until saturday. If you
want more detail goto the forums at grisoft and read about it.

More likely because they allocated "x" weeks to developing the software -
and the working week ends on a Friday. Any extra time can always be used in
testing - EVERY program ALWAYS needs more testing!!

But this only happened to certain computers running 98se or ME. I was,
unfortunately, one of them, and it was a major headache for me: BSODs
and freezes all over the place. However, it did not happen to two other
computers that I know of that are running 98se. And although I've
installed AVG on quite a number of clients also running 98se or ME, I
have yet to hear from any of them regarding any problems at all. So it
was OS dependent and seemed to effect only certain machines with an
unknown something in common.

Well, instead of posting the poorly tested update on a Friday afternoon
and going home for the weekend (leaving the user holding the bag with
little or no support) they could wait until Monday morning when everyone
is back at work from the weekend and available to debug the buggy
release.

I thought the same thing on Saturday when everyone was having problems.
I do updates on demand instead of automatically, and when they released
a fix on Saturday I didn't install it, because I didn't trust the fix
(since my 98se was running fine). Low and behold a reboot on Sunday
morning resulted in a blue screen, fortunately the system got up far
enough to get on the internet and download the fix from Saturday.
However during the install of the update the system hung, and after a
hardware reboot everything was fine. The problem was not only
configuration dependant, but time dependant too.

For those experiencing problems, Grisoft recommends downloading the
latest version of AVG Free, going into Safe Mode to uninstall the
current installation, then installing the new download in Normal Mode
and updating it.

Some how this sounds like the "It's the Users Computer that is messed up
Play Book" not our flawless software that's causing the problem. Even
though the computer was running fine; you apply an update to their
software (avg); and now you have a problem; and it's not them.

No. If you would have checked out the relevant thread at the AVG forum,
you would have learned that the problem was caused by their database
update released last Friday. After examining the problem as reported by
a number of users, they issued an update the following day that
corrected the problem. Uninstalling AVG gets rid of the problem update,
and a fresh installation of AVG allows one to download subsequent good
updates.

You are reading things into Grisoft's response to the situation that
simply aren't there. Actually, they pounced on the problem as soon as
they learned of it, analyzed it, and fixed it the next day. Pretty
responsive for the makers of a free product, I'd say. Is the maker of
your operating system that responsive to problems as they develop?

You apparently have an anti-Grisoft bias, which is perfectly okay. You
don't have to like AVG. But you should be up front about it, and not
unfairly accuse Grisoft of blaming "the Users Computer" when they have
done no such thing.
