Update All fields in word Document

I used to do Edit, Select All, then F9 to update all fields. What is the
equivalent in 2007?

Essentially the same thing. In 2007, there's a Select button at the right
end of the Home ribbon, and Select All is on the dropdown from that button.

If you use keyboard shortcuts, the shortcut for Select All is Ctrl+A, the
same as in previous versions.

F9 is still the Update Fields command.

This does not seem to work. Is there any known bugs in Word 2007 / XP that
would account for this?

Does CTRL+F insert a field? Does ALT+F9 toggle the field code? If CTRL+A
and F9 doesn't update fields then perhaps your keyboard isn't setup
properly.

Ctrl F brings up Find box. Ctrl A selects all text. Alt F9 does toggle
fields. In a large document you get fly away of the page as the fields
expand/ decrease. Ctrl A, F9 is not working. I have a cross refererence on
a figure to use the heading number as the figure number. I have a paragraph
within this item that says see this figure by using a cross ref. This
imported cross reference will take you to the correct heading but it was
imported and is still reporting its original heading number. I have to
manually go to each one of these and force the update. If I do this the
number will correctly update. But I don't want to look for each one of
these manually when I have just inserted 40 pages of text in a 300 page
document.

I am not sure what you are sugggesting to do here. Do you have a non
standard macro at your web site to install that makes up for the fact that F9
is not working? Or is F9 really a standard macro. If so why do I not
have that functionality. Could it be that my company may have elected not
to install it?

I have no idea why F9 is not working on your computer - though if you have a
dual function keyboard, it could be that F9 is currently configured to the
alternative function - or some other software may have grabbed the
association. The macro simply updates fields wherever they are in the
document.

Thanks for your help. I was not asking why F9 is not working. I was asking
what the purpose of the macros were. Why did you write a macro to do what
Word is supposed to be able to do on its own? Is this the macro normally
attached to the F9 key? I haven't used macros in Word so I am a bit
confused. I would appreciate a little more details. Are the macros to be
found on your website or are these standard macros that are part of word and
all I am doing is reinstalling them?

Graham's macro updates any fields, even if they are not selected; that's how
it is different from the UpdateFields command.

However, since your F9 key isn't working, have you looked in the Customize
Keyboard dialog box to see if it has been assigned to a different command
than UpdateFields?

The macro was written to update all fields in all story ranges of the
document, rather than have to open each story range, select the text and
click F9. It was also used to provide a useful example for the web page.
There are no macros installed in Word by default. There are lots of examples
of macro code on my web site and elsewhere. Macros are used to provide
extensions to the functionality of Word and to facilitate repeated functions
that are laborious to achieve manually.

I am having the same issue on one of my documents, e.g., Select All, press F9
and cross reference fields do not update. This command works as it should in
other documents I've created that have field codes, so I assume there is some
element that's corrupting this document.

I did notice that printing the document will update the fields, but you must
have "update fields before printing" selected. This is found in the Office
Button, Word Options, Display, Printing Options.
