update access database created by another user

We have a database that was created by someone who is no longer with the
company and I have no way of contacting them. I need to update my data.
Whenever I open it, I don't see the tools option in my menu bar at the top.
If I hit f11 I can open my tables and other objects, but I still can't update
my database. What am I doing wrong

Is it locked? Do you login using a username and password?

Try this and let us know if it works.

Open the database but press the shift key while doing so (keep it pressed
down until you have the database open).

I was able to access the database when I held down the shift key.
