I was given an HP that unfortunatly say's that it is XP
ready but came loaded with Win me.
After a clean reinstall (via the system recovery disc) I
am experiencing several annoyances which from what I have
heard are probably Me based.

I am looking for people who have upgraded from ME to XP
professional as to how the upgrade went and if there were
any problems with XP as a result of upgrading rather then
starting from scratch. I am talking purly Operating system
issues, not software compatability.

Thanx
Dan

It is always best to perform a clean install. especially if you are upgrading due to
problems with your present OS. Upgrading will NOT correct them, it may them worse or will
introduce a whole new slew of problems.

a clean install and the gravy was just fine after that.

Whenever upgrading either an HP or Compaq and it's 2 years
or older - Be sure to update the BIOS to the latest release before
doing the O/S upgrade.
**If it has 128 Megabytes or less of memory, spend the $40 &
take it to 256 Megabytes (In a single stick).

While it may be best to perform a clean install, I've not had any problems
with upgrading from ME to XP. In fact, ME was an upgrade from WIN 98SE. So
it was an upgrade of an upgrade. I have done this with varying types of
hardware, processors, memory and system configurations with the end result
being very stable systems. You don't say what your system configuration is
or what annoyances you experiencing, so I suggest having a look here,
http://tinyurl.com/176j , to check your system compatibility. Also, I've not
heard of a system loaded with one OS stating that it's ready for the next
step up. Is this machine from a vendor? BTW....I'm using XP Home, but Pro
should not incur any problems that Home would not.

HTH,

I am not sure where the machine came from. I think it is a
1.2 Gig processor, around there any way with out being
home to look at it. It has a big sticker on the front that
say's XP ready. MAybe it was when XP first came out and
they gave you a choice of which operating system you
wanted. Obviously if that is the case the original owner
made a mistake. I got the machine for free because he was
having all kinds of problems with it. At any rate since I
did get it for free I did not ask two many questions :-)
THanx for the advice and the opinion

Greetings --

Some people will recommend that you perform a clean installation,
rather than upgrade over Win98/Me. For the most part, I feel that
these people, while well-meaning, are living in the past, and are
basing their recommendation on their experiences with older operating
systems. You'd probably save a lot of time by upgrading your PC to
WinXP, rather than performing a clean installation, if you've no
hardware or software incompatibilities. Microsoft has greatly
improved (over earlier versions of Windows) WinXP's ability to
smoothly upgrade an earlier OS.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

ME to XP normally goes well. There can be troubles with highly
proprietary hardware, like HP tends to use, but if they said 'XP ready'
that should not be a problem. But I would check with them to see if
there are any special drivers needed.

Also make sure you have adequate RAM - 256 MB is basic, heavy workloads
(especially big graphics) may need more. Make sure any AV; system
utilities like Norton; and CD during software are uninstalled first, and

That is not so when upgrading a 9x system to XP - almost all the system
gets replaced anyway, and there is the possibility of retaining old
drivers for legacy hardware where there are no native XP ones. Also
installed software (with one or two exceptions) will come over. Do an
upgrade in the first instance; should it not work out it is then
possible to still do the clean install. The converse is not true
