unwnated repeated characters

I have several cells in my worksheet that automatically
repeat whatever characters I enter. For example, if I type
TEXT and exit the cell the cell displays
TEXTTEXTTEXTTEXTTEXTTEXT.

How do I stop this from happening?

That's the setting for horizontal alignment. Format>Cells, second tab.
