unwanted themes audio

Win 2000 Pro SP4 with all critical updates
New build

The sound effects from "haunted house" are playing. I do not have themes
installed.

start > run > themes brings up the "themes" gui. I have unchecked "sound
events", but the sounds continue.

Other than deleting, moving, or renaming, for example, chord.wav to
chord.vaw, what can I do?

Set the sounds in the "Sounds and Multimedia" Control Panel
Click [Start]
Settings
Control Panel
Double-click Sounds and Multimedia

Select "no sounds".

Well, guess what, I did & I still have sounds!

Oh well.
