Unwanted Sound

System XP Professional ,Dell Dimension 2400Computer.

Twice now, on separate days I have gotten nerve wrecking unwanted sounds. It
is difficult to describe a sound. It's like a door bell (Typical Ding-Dong)
which is continuous.) Also computer seemed to run slow at these times,
especially on start up and shut down. I solved the problem on both occasion,
but I am not sure what I really did to get out of it. I believe the first
time System Restore solved the problem. At the second occasion it didn't .
This time I did a Safe startup and just looked around. I really did nothing.
Shut down and went back to regular start up. Problem is gone. Any ideas on
what's going on??

Just a shot in the dark, when you get the sound you might try unplugging USB
devices that are not vital. It is possible a USB device is going funky.

Sorry for the lack of info... but if you unplug a device and the sound goes
away, at least you have found the problem. At this point I would just post
back. Probably the thing to do would be to install the newest drivers for
the device in question... of course this is a stretch as we have not found
this to be the source of the problem.
