Unwanted shut down

XP Home randomly shuts down when running programmes. Event viewer indicates"The General Purpose USB Driver (adildr.sys) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " But this may or may not be the problem.
Any ideas?

Most likely, USB is not the problem. Unplug everything from USB ports, and
see if it helps.
