Every time I start the computer some sort of unprogrammed by me scan
commences and carries on for few min. during which time it is nearly
impossible to carry out any other tasks. This also happens at approx. 13.00
hrs when the computer is on. Is there a way of finding out which/whose scans
are being done?

Hmmm... 'scans' <- can you be more specific?
Checked your AntiVirus to see if it is scheduled to do startup scans?

Thank you for replying. My antivirus is AGV and it is not programmed to
carry out any scans. I know that Microsoft Malicious software Removal Tool
carries out a daily scan, but I do not know what else is scanning ( it is
not Spyware Doctor, because I checked with them) I caught a glimpse once, of
an announcement that a scan is in progress, but since there are more than
one a day I would like to know what else is scanning my computer. Which way
can I find out?

Click Start, Run, type MSCONFIG, click OK, click the Startup tab and see
what programs are running. De-select some of them and reboot. You can
eventually narrow down what program is doing this.

Many thanks, that was very helpful, but which tab should I click on when an
unprogrammed scan commences at 13.00hrs not at Startrup?

If another scan runs at night, after you've stopped the one,
Ctrl/Alt-Delete would let you see what processes are using the CPU..
Press the CPU button/header for that column twice to arrange the
processes by most-to-least.
