One of the Windows 'automatic updates' has presented me
with a box that requests a password. I DON'T WANT IT AT
ALL. I live alone, and have no need of it. All it serves
to do is force me to click it (It doesn't work) or my
computer, as far as I know, won't boot up or shut down
completely - it will just hang there, waiting. How can I
shut this thing off? Many thanks to anybody who can help.

The .NET update has created a user. In Control Panel-Users, delete it!
