unwanted internet connecting

computer connects to internet on its own. we have a dial
up connection and do not want to be connected at all
times. have shut off all auto updates but computer still
connects.

That is true.
I considered putting that in the post.
I prefer to let the OP try that, then repost if it doesn't fix the issue.

There is often an unlimited amount of information that could be put in a
post, covering myriad situations.
I have learnt to keep it brief over the years and try to do it in a series
rather than one big post.
