Unwanted icons on DeskTop -- not "shortcuts"

Pat

When I download (like Adobe) from net, my OS asks not if I want to "run," but
only if I want to "copy." Yes, from the "copy" I can install the wanted
software. But the icon directing me to "install" remains on my desktop and
all attempts to delete unwanted icon cause a failure to start on restart and
the "repair" always replaces the icons. If I don't get an education, I'll
eventually have a desktop full of icons I neither need nor want. Help! And
thanks for your time.

Apologizing for my inexperience. Maybe Thursday before I can get a
"screenshot." Have never done it, plus don't know how to attach to this
reply. Don't want to waste your valuable time, so if I don't hear from you,
I'll understand.

Thanks.

Sorry 'bout the delay. Landed in the hospital Wednesday night.

Have been able to generate copy of desk top, but don't see clearly how to
attach it to this communication. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

That sounds to me like the application that put the "install" icon on
the desktop doesn't want you to remove it.

Please attach a screenshot of you desktop so I can see.

Also, use MSCONFIG (-<WIN_LOGO_KEY>+<R>, MSCONFIG, <ENTER>-) to disable
any unwanted startup applications and non-microsoft services, which may
include this errent "install" program.

Donald,

I, too, have the same prob as the OP. I understand your reply and it makes
sense to delete the desktop icons that are the 'setup' files. Here's my
question...How would I know if the programs the icons are representing are
installed somewhere other than the desktop if the icon is on the desktop?
(eeeeks...make sense?)

When right-clicking and checking the properties of the 3 icons I want to
delete (Antivirus and Spyware programs I just upgraded) it says they're
applications. (.exe) ??? One is 20 MB...other is 111MB. Since I've
already clicked on these and installed the programs, can these be safely
deleted? I certainly don't want to delete my whole Antivirus program. :)

Thanks! :)
