unwanted desktop icons

unwanted desktop icons have appeared i presume from a website. how can i get rid of them? tried deleting their files but everytime i restart the system they reappear. they have also changed my home pape to their site, which again keeps coming back after i try to get rid of it.please help. thanks

Sounds like spyware or a home page hijacker.

Run these tools weekly:
spybot -- http://www.safer-networking.org/
ad-aware -- http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
HiJackThis - http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

Download these freeware products to help remove adware and
spyware:

Ad-Aware- http://www.lavasoft.de

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

CWShredder:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

Update each one using their check for updates feature and
run them.
