Unwanted deletions

Since about the 15th of this month, I have had a lot of deletions of files
and folders (mainly shortcuts). I have tried to Unerase, but no luck. Quite a
few of these files are now beginning with ~$.... and when I recover and open
them they come up with a file conversion window.
How do I get them back - particularly a folder which held all the
information I need to apply for vacant positions.
PLEASE HELP - it's pretty (no, very) urgent. Thanks
