Unwanted Deletion of Copied Folder and Files

I created a copy of a folder (call it "2007") and the files within it and
placed the copy (call this folder "2008") in the same directory. Both
folders contained copies of the same files. In folder 2008 I opened a file
(call it "Inventory 2007") and deleted all the data within and saved it as
Inventory 2008. Then I deleted Inventory 2007 from the 2008 folder.

The next day I went to find Inventory 2007 in the 2007 folder and it was
gone. I hadn't deleted it from the wrong folder, it was gone from both the
2007 AND THE 2008 folders. And to make things worse, it wasn't in my recycle
bin.

2007 is a shared folder on a network. We do not bypass the Recycle Bin when
we delete files and folders. The computer I was using is not the server for
the network. We are using Windows XP Prof SP2. We tried using software to
find deleted files but the information we received was unusable. At this
point we've had to manually re-enter the data we lost but what made this
happen?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide any insight at all.
