I had WindowsXP Home on the wrong partition (after a repair attempt) &
after returning it to C:
I now have the choice of two (WindowsXP Home) on bootup. I have since
deleted "windows" on my partition E: but still have the unwanted
choice. Any help gratefully accepted. TIA

Here is how you can modify your choices:

Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Edit

Thanks for prompt reply, Pegasus (MVP) but my "recovery" is not
working. ???:-)

Click on the Edit button. You'll see two lines that look more or less like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Determine which is which by comparing disk and partition numbers. Delete the line for the OS that no longer exists.

Thank you all very much, gentlemen. I deleted the unwanted line and
the job is done.
Great help. :-)
