Unusually Long Boot up After Adding additional HDD

I run winxp home and I just added an additional 30 gig HDD
This HDD was not blank and was previously used
when I first added it an then turned on the PC
it would go to the boot screen and just stay there with the blue
bar moving for like 5 min or more, So I restarted and booted into safe mode
and was able to get back into windows and check out the HDD i added
I went to the management console and reformated the HDD that was at that time
in FAT32 which I had believed was the problem why it would not boot.
after formating the drive to NTFS I rebooted and it did the same thing again
So I rebooted and selected safe mode and it began the normal procedure of
booting into safe mode the it restarted on it's own and began a normal boot
and the within about 3 min I was at the welcome screen and I am in right now
typing this post,

I Guess my question is - Is there anything else I should to improve my
boot up time now that i have a HDD that has 30 gig free and could this now be
the cause of the long delay on the boot screen. I just want to make it boot
up as fast as possible
or have I not done something I should have done to begin with

What speed does the 30GB hard drive operate at? What speed for the main
drive? Is your system board capable of letting each drive run at its best
speed or does it slow down to accommodate the slower drive?

What happens if you take the 30GB hard drive out? Does the system boot at
normal speed again? What happens if you put the 30GB on a different
controller than the main drive?

Is your BIOS set to autodetect hard disks? Set it up properly and that may
help.

PLEASE follow the flow of conversation, don't jump from bottom posts to top

Reordered so the conversation flows.

Auto means it has to take time to detect the disk parameters each time you
boot. Set them yourself.
