Unusual spacing between words in Microsoft Word

G

Guest

When using full justification, certain lines of text include wide blank
spaces between words, seemingly to accomplish justification at the right
margin. Is there any way to correct word spacing in full justification>

None that I know of. You can change the justification but not the settings
within it.

Carol - Thanks for responding. Am I to understand that there is no way to
correct unusual spacing between text in Word? Are there no hyphen settings
that can be used to allocate more text to a particular line so as to
eliminate the spacing between text?

Hi Thom:

Yes, you can set word to use hyphenation. On the Tools menu, point to
Language, and then click Hyphenation. Select the Automatically hyphenate
document check box. Int he Hyphenation Zone box, enter the amount of space to
leave between the end of the last word in a line and the right margin. To
reduce the number of hyohens, make the hyphenation zone wider. To reduce the
raggedness of the right margin, make the hyphenation zone narrower. In the
Limit consecutive hyphens to box, enter the number of consecutive lines that
can be hyphenated. I'm sorry I misunderstood what you were asking. I hope
this is helpful to you!

You can enable automatic hyphenation or hyphenate manually (using the
Optional Hyphen, Ctrl+Hyphen).

Carol - Thank you very much for your quick response. We have been using Word
Perfect for years and are now trying to work out these formatting issues in
Word. You seem to be a real expert at it. We are in the real estate
valuation and consulting business. What's your specialty?

Hi Thom,

Thanks for your kind words. I am a consultant and also work in the legal
arena. Hang in there with your conversion to Word. Once you get used to it,
you'll love it!

Hi Thom,

An additional improvement in spacing can be had by going to Tools > Options
Compatibility and checking the option for "Do full justification like
WordPerfect 6.x for Windows".

Word's normal justification behavior always expands the word spacing, which
easily leads to those wide spaces between words. The WordPerfect behavior
first tries to reduce the spacing, to see whether the first word of the next
line can be wrapped back. Only if that doesn't work does it then expand the
spacing. Since a lot of fonts default to a fairly loose spacing anyway, this
often produces better-looking text.
