UNUSUAL MOUSE MOVEMENT

my mouse keeps moving diagolly on its own. Sometimes when
using the system, the mouse just start moving and i have
no control over it. I use a dell inspiron 4100 laptop
running windows XP home edition

Take the ball out and clean the rollers. They accumulate a crusty deposit
that makes the ball skip. I use a penknife to dislodge the the cruft.
 
Does this laptop use a touchpad or one of those 'pencil eraser' touch point
devices for the mouse? If it's the pencil eraser type I've seen that
before. This happens when you apply constant pressure and the mouse assumes
it's centered when it's really not. When this has happened to me I'd just
let the mouse go until it hits the side of the screen and stops, then count
to five and it recalibrates itself back to normal.
