Unusual hard drive fault

I have a 13G hard drive that suddenly gave read and write errors
when it was nearly full. Scandisk showed it having random bad sectors
but only in about the top 3G. I used a program to shrink the only partition
to 10G and it has worked as a 10G drive since.
My guess is a problem with the head positioning mechanism which only
shows up on the higher numbered tracks.

For how long tho ?

Its more likely to be a problem with the flexible connection to
the heads which is only a problem with some arm positions.
