Unusual Fragmentation

Just over a month ago I replaced my HP Pavilion m530n with the Media Center
m7160n. With the old computer I defragmented about once a month since it
rarely showed even 10% fragmentation. With the new computer I get a huge
amount of fragmented files every two or three days! This is more than I have
ever had since owning computers since 1984.
I have used spyware programs, have firewall and virus programs working all
the time (same as used on the previous computer). As usual, the computer
slows down as it goes along.
Any help will be appreciated. I've tried all the usual steps, including
total restore from the DVDs made on the first day.

When you changed your computer did you change what you do with the
computer? Do you record big files or TV shows now, etc? Malware doesn't
cause fragmentation (although if someone "owned" your machine and was
using it as a FTP server for their illicit goods that might account for
it.) If you're dealing with large media files, especially if they're on
the same drive as the operating system and other programs, expect a large
amount of fragmentation. Solution - store them on a separate drive.

Nowadays file sizes are so huge, be it the Word Doc or a media file, i
wont be surprising if your drive gets fragmented if you use i
intensively. If there isnt any specific problem and defragging manuall
is a pain, get an automatic defragger and schedule it to run daily. Gu
Luck.
