Unusual Fax Address Book

A

Al Camp

I recently sent a fax, and discovered a new Address Book listed, called "John's Contacts",
with two unknown email addresses in it.
Normally I just show Shared Contacts, and my own OE address book.

I need to find where that Fax Address book is coming from.
Searched the drive for .wab files and the text "Contacts", and all I find is my own.

Just ran Virus scan 2 days ago, and came up clean. Also, I have no pirate ware when
checked with SpyBot, Defender, and AdAware.

How can I find this Contact file, and delete it?

Thanks,
Al Camp

You discovered the "new Address Book" where exactly?
Windows XP Fax stores fax numbers in the Windows Address Book by default
unless you install Outlook. If you do, it stores them in Outlook.

I only discovered the "odd" address book when I went to send a fax. It was listed along
with my usual SharedContacts and AlCampContacts (which is my OE address book in a .wab
file).

I should have mentioned that the "odd" address book does not appear in Outlook Express.

Where is the Windows Address Book stored? I can only locate my OE .wab file on the drive.

Thanks for your quick response...

Not sure I understand your question. Everything you post sounds like normal
behavior. What is your question?

Russ,
Ordinarily, when I send a fax document, MSFax offers me 2 Address books to choose from.
Shared Contacts, and Al Camp's Contacts. Al Camp's Contacts is also my OE default
address book.
That's all good so far...

Recently though, ANOTHER address book has appeared as a choice in my fax transmissions.
It's called "John's Contacts", with two strange/bogus addresses contained in it. This
could be some sort of Trojan, although I can not find any info on the web regarding that.
I am also virus/adware/pirateware free at this time, as best as I can determine.

Problem...
I did not create this address book, OE does not list it, and I can not find it anywhere
on the drive (using a .wab search).

*Where is MSFax getting this alien address book from?*

MSFax does not seem to allow me to delete the John's Contacts address book.
How can I get rid of it?

Hope that is what you wanted...
Thanks for any assistance,
Al Camp

Are these perhaps recipients you entered by sending a Fax directly from the
Fax Wizard? What do you mean by "strange/bogus addresses?"
I can't reproduce any of your findings because I run Outlook. It may be that
the fax wizard is simply saving numbers to which you've sent faxes and
storing them in a separate folder in the WAB.

Russ,
Thanks for the help. I found the bogus address book "under" (subdirectory) of my
normal address book, and simply deleted it. I was looking for a seperate .wab.
This alien address book nust have been created by a trojan or spyware. I did not
create it, and none of the addresses in it have ever been used by me in a fax or email.
All set now...
Thanks again,
Al Camp
