Unused Desktop Icons

I periodically get a popup message baloon from Windows XP telling me I
have unused icons on my desktop and offering to run a wizard to remove
them. Those Icons are there because I want them to be there when I do
want to use them.

How do I disable this?

Couldn't find anything in help that I recognized as pertaining to this,
and of course Windows no longer ships with a user's manual.

Go to Control Panel and double click Display.
In Display Properties, click on the Desktop tab.
Click on the Customize button.
On the General page of Desktop Items remove the check mark from
the box next to "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days".
Click OK twice.

Good luck

It doesn't delete the shortcuts, it consolodates them in a folder on the
desktop

I know what it does and doesn't do. I just don't want it to do it.

I've got the icons where I want them, and it annoys me that Windows
keeps trying to change it.

I found it where you said it was, so hopefully this will work. Find out
in a couple of months I guess.
