unstable system and trouble starting

Hi, I'm running Xp home edition on an HP Pavilion
AMD Athlon xp 2000+
1.66 GHz
480 MB of RAM
And 70 GB hard drive only about a quarter full.
I have recently had some problems with the computer freezing. I scanned with several virus scan programs. The following were all found on multiple runs:
Java/ClassLoader.E trojan
Java/ClassLoader.B trojan
Java/Exploit.Bytverify trojan
(these were found on NOD32-trial version) There were also a few others that were found by other scanners.
Using Symantec’s Virus Encyclopedia I removed the viruses. Some of this involved removing or changing lines in the registry.
Now the computer freezes less . . . however, it is having a hard time booting up. A message will appear that says: "windows has had a problem starting" and gives me a few options (start windows normally, last know good config, safe mode). If any of these options are selected that same screen will appear. After a combination of furiously pushing the power button and selecting random options, windows will eventually start. Then run normally until it freezes hours later.
I finally resolved myself to start over and reload windows. Only I can't find my Windows XP CD. I still have everything that came with the computer . . . all the manuals and the Encarta CD. But no windows CD.
Any ideas on how to save my machine?

If the computer is a OEM HP, contact their customer
service and hope they will send you some replacement
system recovery CD's.. Also, invest in a full version
virus scanner and update it regularly.

My HP came with 3 system recovery CD's and the serial #
was on the 3 level jewel case.

Good luck..
