Unspecified Error, help

Hi,

I was capturing a video yesterday with MM2 without
problems, and now, when I try to run MM2, it shows
an "Unspecified Error" window and then the program close.

But when I log in into my computer with a different user
and run MM2, it works fine.

Can you know something that I can do to solve this
problem?

Thank you.

Logging into an XP machine as a different user will cause any program
you decide to run, to work in a fresh memory space, and so if the fault is
not the machine itself the indication is an issue specific to your usual
logon name and the workspace that that logon name gives you.

Question to ask yourself...did you reboot or just logon using a new name? If
you did not reboot you need to check whether MM2 is still running as a
process.....

Whilst logged on eith your usual name press Ctrl-Alt-Del and select Task
Manager. Look in the process list for moviemk.exe. If you find that
process/program in the list and yet it appears that it is not actually
running (You can not see/use the program) then what has happened is MM2 has
in some way crashed and windows XP has not cleaned up!...Under these
circumstances you will have lost any changes made to your project5 since the
last "save". It is safe to click on "End Process" in the Task Manager and
restart MM2 in the normal way, however, the cause of the program crash (MM2)
is not necessarily the fault of MM2. It is therefore more correct to reboot
the machine and then reload MM2

If the above is not the solution to your problem and having rebooted you
still find that MM2 will not run under your usual logon name, but will run
under another name, then, you need to consider the access level of your
usual logon name and decide whether the enviroment created by the name is
suitable for running MM2. If the issue is this later one...sorry, the
problem may be very hard to find and would require a knowledge of what you
have changed on the machine in recent times at least. One possible solution
would be to invoke the last restore point...baring in mind that doing that
may make other software fail (it depends on what you have done since the
last restore point)

All the best..........

I've battled this problem for months now and haven't found a solution. For
me, it's not a process issue, as I've rebooted many times since then. I've
also taken to combing the registry and the file structure under the affected
user profile, looking for movie maker-specific entries to delete. I've
deleted many with no success. Logging in as another user (also with
Administrator permissions) always works around the problem.

I've noticed that the problem also affects the Microsoft Producer add-in for
Office XP. It also fails to start with the same "Unspecified Error" message.

Any ideas?
