Unsolvable problem?

Peter

This is a follow up to a problem posted a few days ago in the "network
group". The problem still exists and I am hopelessly lost.
The following tests were done based on suggestions from Robert Lin. I don't
know what they tell me or what to do next.
Which computer has the problem?
What are the possible solutions?
There are no firewalls on either computer!

Call the machines Desk and Lap.

FROM DESK
1. Can ping Desk by IPaddress or name
2. Can ping Lap by IP address.
4. Cannot ping Lap by name.
3. Can access and brouse Lap from Network Neighbourhood.
5. BROWSTAT STATUS only sees Desk. Message is "master
browser is: Desk.
1 backup server retrieved from master Desk .
There are 1 servers in domain WORKGROUP.
6. NETVIEW only sees Desk.
7. NETVIEW \\ path to Lap finds Lap.
8. NETVIEW \\ Lap does not find Lap.

FROM LAP
1. Can ping Lap but not Desk (by IPaddress or name).
2. Cannot access Desk from Network Neighbourhood.
3. BROWSTAT STATUS sees Lap. Message is "master browser
name is: Lap.
1 backup server retrieved from master Lap.
2 servers in domain WORKGROUP.
4. NETVIEW sees both Desk and Lap.
5. NETVIEW \\ Lap succeeds
6. NETVIEW \\ Desk fails with error 53 (using URL or name).

I am desperate for help on this.

Hi

Have you checked your TCP/IP settings to make sure they are OK? The TCP/IP settings can be reset to default if need be.

Thanks Will.

I have repeatedly checked TCP/IP settings and have also reset to default.
Also ran "repair" on the network connections.

Hi Denny.

If the DNS server is the router, 192.168.2.1, then yes, I can.

Hello Will.

I replied to your question yesterday but my reply did not appear in the
newsgroup. I must have screwed up.
If my DNS server is the router, then yes.
Both machines can access the internet.
By the way, the network worked fine for quite a long time.

Peter

Hi Peter

Can you ping your DNS Server?
