I have suddenly begun to experience a pornographic pop-up when booting up my
machine, and it is almost the last item in the boot-up sequence.

The web site is 'www.virgins.se_' and at one time a pop-up window in the
bottom left-hand corner of the screen came with a list from the Startup
Registry that could be ticked to remove certain items. This web site was
listed and I ticked it to remove it. However, it still continues to pop-up.

Is there anybody out there who can tell how to get rid of this annoying and
frankly obscene pop-up. I am usually the only person to use the machine, but
on occasions my children do use my machine when they visit.

Cheers

Go through these malware removal steps:

As always, make sure that your operating system is fully patched (SP2
and subsequent updates), you have a current version antivirus installed
(not earlier than 2004 version) with an active subscription and updated
virus definitions, and that you have a firewall in place.

When visiting porn sites, always be careful not to download/install
their "free" viewers. You'll get more than expected, every time. To
repair the current situation, uninstall the "viewer(s)" provided and
then use Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search and Destroy
from www.safer-networking.org/ to clean up any residue. Both have
free versions for personal use.

You should also try using MSConfig to see if something is being
started each time you reboot.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

I suspect that next in line to porn sites, and next in line to most sites
offering free or trial / rogue anti-spyware software that all appear to be
riddled with malware of one type or another, are "Genealogy" based web
sites. I've dealt with out several Windows platforms recently whose owners
were researching family trees, and http://www.ancestry.com was riddled with
doubleclick ads. and worse nasties, if memory serves, and
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk was just as bad.

It wouldn't be as bad if those damned genealogy sites were built so that
after paying a subscription, the site was presented to payees browser window
without the ads. and other malware but, they HAVEN'T EVEN GOT THE DECENCY to
do that !!!
