Unrecognized USB Device

If this is not the correct newsgroup for this post,
please suggest a more appropriate one.

I have a GARMIN GPSMAP 60CS device which is supposed to
connect with a USB connection to the PC. I am using an
IBM Thinkpad model A21, and running XP Professional with
the latest updates.

When the GPS is connected to the system, XP first
recognizes that a new device has been found, then tells
me that the device is not working. Under the Device
Manager, the device shows up under the USB Controllers as
an UNKNOWN DEVICE. It is not recognized as a GARMIN
device, and the GARMIN driver is not installed.

I have spent nearly 6 hours with the Garmin support
personnel, but still am not able to get the device to be
properly recognized.

(Just to be sure that the GPS is actually working
correctly, I have successfully connected the GPS to a
desktop unit, also running XP and at the same service
level. The device is correctly recognized, a "GARMIN
Devices" entry is listed, with a "Garmin USB GPS" device
in the drop down list. The driver installed correctly
and I can use the device with this computer.)

Garmin support finally reached a point of suggesting that
I reinstall XP, but I do not want to do that unless it is
absolutely necessary.

Has anyone had a similar problem, or provide other
suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Does the 'canot install' message include 'data unknown'? If so, the
problem is with permissions; see:
