Unrecognized format on Access 97 database

I'm using Access 97 on Win XP SP2 machine.

I have an Access 97 database located on a network. I have a local Access 97
database located on my machine. I link to some table on the network version.
Every once in a while, my local Access database states that the network db
is in an unrecognizable format. It's not, it's an Access 97 database that is
not corrupted, etc. I can go to the db and open it just fine. I have even
repaired & compacted the db and even created a new db and imported everything
into it just in case there was something wrong with the old one. It still
happens. It's not everytime, but it shouldn't be happening at all.

Any idea what would be causing this strange error to appear and how to
prevent it? Also, is there a way to make the links to this network db
"read-only" so it isn't possible to make any updates to it?

Thanks!

My WAG would be that it's a network issue. Access could be sold as a network
stress test program because if there's a problem with a network, Access will
find it. Make sure that you have all the most up to date service releases and
service packs applied.

One other thing would be to temporarily disable your virus checker to see if
if is causing problems.

As far as a read only link, there's really no way to do that. The best way
would be user level security and keep users out of the database window and
only in forms where Add and Update are disabled.
