I recently formated and did a fresh install of Windows
XP. After the install I used the CD-ROM to install some
software (So I know the CD-ROM drive did work). I then
updated to XP SP1a and used windows updater to update XP.
At some point during the windows updates or after the
updates, my computer no longer recognises my CD-ROM
drive. I haven't added/deleted any CD-ROM drivers and it
is just a generic drive so there is not an installation
disk for it. Anyway I was wondering what is wrong and why
XP will no longer recognise my CD-ROM drive. Thanks in
advance. Hunter

Can you verify that BIOS still sees your CD-ROM drive?
If so, go to control panels -> System -> hardware ->
device manager
Are you seeing any ? devices?
Start from here. I've had my cd-rom drives just stop
working before.

I checked bios and it sees ATAPI CD-ROM 52x, I restarted
and turned show startup log. The log shows that it
recognises the CD-ROM drive. And now it is showing back
up in XP. So some how XP recognises it w/o me changing
any settings or anything. Any advice incase this happens
again? Btw, I checked the device manager before I reset
to check the bios and no CD-ROM showed. Just checked
again and it is now showing the CD-ROM. I reset the
computer several times before posting, so reseting cant
be what fixed it. Anywho works now, but would like to
know how to prevent this from happening again. Thanks in
advance again, hunter :)
