unreadable fonts IE 6.0.2800.1106

using Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106, I can't read the
font - it appears as a series of empty rectangles and
symbols in place of letters. Have the same problem on
Amamzon.com in the "editorial reviews" section. If my
browser is current, why would this be?
(the page is perfectly readable in my old 4.7 Netscape
Navigator)

Empty your cache. Delete all temporary internet files and cookies.

Go to View > Text Size and change to one size lower.

Thanks - tried all of the above, nothing changes. I should
have mentioned I'm using Windows 98, if that makes any
difference. Any ideas why this only happens on a few sites?

How long since you've visited Windows Update?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
