unreadable attachment

I received an attachment which is unreadable. The text is random. Is there
any way to convert it back to plain English?

Did you open the attachment directly or save it to the HD first? Was the
attachment a Word document or some other file format?

I opened it directly and I believe it is a word file

Try saving it to the HD first, then open from within Word. If it is a Word
file, it will have a .doc file extension. If you do not have file extensions
displayed, it will have a Word document icon.

Thanks for prompt response Suzanne.

I try to open attatchment direcely and I get the error message "not a valid
single web page file". Then I put to HD and can open. but extra step,etc.

It is a word file.

It's generally not a good idea (for a variety of reasons) to open any kind
of attachment (aside from .eml attachments) directly but especially a bad
idea for Word documents. Yes, it requires an extra step, but it provides
protection against not only viruses but also the possibility of losing any
editing you may do to the file.
