Unpartition Hard Drive?

John

New laptop running Windows XP Media Centre Edition.Hard drive has
2 partitions,one named C,the other D. C has 13GB left on it,D has 25GB.
I would like to remove the partition, how do I do this? Is there a way within
windows or do I have to use 3rd party software?
Oh,the laptop is part of a home wireless network.

Thanks.

Are you sure there are only two partitions?
You may have a recovery partition that is hidden.
Look in Disk Management or check the boot.ini file.

You could move your My Documents folder to D.

You have to use third party software.

There are two ways to do this:

1. The destructive way - Since you have a laptop, reinstall from your
Restore Disk after first checking if you will have the option to use one
partition. Sony does this - IMO - kind of stupid partitioning scheme on
their laptops and the Restore process I've seen on clients' machines
does allow you to choose the partioning.

2. The non-destructive way - You will need third-party partitioning
software such as Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic. Even then,
you should first back up your data because Stuff Happens.

You can remove the partition with XP but can't add it to the existing, you
need 3rd solution for that.

You can get a trial version of bootitng from www.terabyteunlimited.com.
Make the install media using their instructions, boot from it and cancel
when you get the install dialog. This will put you in maintenance mode.
You can delete the D partition. You will then see space as free. You can
expand C to utilize all remaining space. This is non-destructive of C,
however, you should backup first. If you have the hardware, you can make
an image to cd or dvd although an external usb hd would come in handy.
If you decide to keep bootitng, after deleting D partition, install
bootitng (let it chose where, which will be and of drive), then continue.
