Unordered icons in open file boxes

Recently when going to file/open in most applications,
all the files listed are in a random order. I would like
them by default to be in alphabetical order. How can I
do this?

Telling me how to order them in alphabetical order won't
help me, I need to know how I can make all open file
boxes automatically order files alphabetically. Is it in
the registry??
