Unmoveable white square on desktop

I got this after trying to re-install Creative software for Audigy 2 ZS. The
square is icon/shortcut sized. I can't get any help from Creative support or
forums. I tried everything I could think of and the current situation is
that I have deleted all Creative programs, folders and registry references.
The Audigy card is unplugged while I ponder what to do next but the white
square is still there unless I boot into safe mode which tells me it may be
nothing to do with Creative after all. Any help would be much appreciated.
 
Replying to my post in case anybody is interested:
The problem was Creative Mediasource which has a stubborn exe file.
