UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Whenever I try to turn on my computer an error named
UMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME appears. Please help!

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

I have a dell Inspiron 8100. Where is the hard drive
located & if I remove it, will there be memory loss?

I talked to someone at Dell support last night & he told
me to push ctrl, alt, & d as the computer is starting
up. It then goes to the drive diagnostics page. I don't
know what to do after that.

Laptops usually have a panel underneath.
Remove the screw and you have access to the hard drive.
Check the manual or contact Dell at their website for details.
