I've a Dell Latitde Laptop, I recently reinstalled
Windows XP, it was all working great for the first couple
of days, but now I'm getting the above message and
Technical Information:
***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80EFAE30, 0xC000006, 0x00000000,
0x00000000)
I've tried everything - chkdsk /r, chkdsk /p, fixboot....
I can't unistall anything as I can't get beyond the
Windows Professional screen.
It tells me there's no disk in the drive when there is.
I can't disable memory options as safe mode won't work,
it just hangs.
It's not the cable
It won't let me reinstall anything...........
I'm totally lost, I've searched the internet high and
low. Surely there's a solution?!

ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Lee;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

The instructions for use should be with them, different manufacturers
do it differently.
They usually fit on a floppy disk.
The diagnostics will help determine the serviceability of the drive.

Hi,

I'd tried the first couple of tips before, and still no luck! With
reference to the hard drive diagnostics - what do I do with
these....if I do find them!?!

Dells installs hardware diagnostic utilities on a hidden partition on the
harddrive. (unless you blew away all partitions when you did the reinstall)
and are accessed by pressing f12 during boot.

If the partition is gone the same utilities are on one of the CDs that
shipped with the computer.
