UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME problem

OK I'm trying to fix my friends Dell laptop that had the
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error with the blue screen. I used the Windows
XP Recovery cd and got to the recovery console. From there I tried to
run chkdsk /p and it stopped at 75% because one or more volumes were
unrecoverable. So I then decided to try and use the fixboot command,
except this time when I went to recovery console it had the C:\WINDOWS
, I hit enter to exit and the computer restarted normally this time.
The only problem is I am able to get the desktop however the computer
is running INCREDBILY slow and hasn't even finished loading everything
in 15 minutes. Any suggestions on what I can do from here?

Joseph;
Power off
Remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.
