Unmountable Boot Volume Error

I know a million similar questions have been asked, but I don't know if
anyone knows about this or not. I got the stupid error message, along with
the hexadecimal numbers 0x000000ED(0x82F99900, 0xC000006, 0x00000000,
0x00000000). I haven't installed any programs or hardware lately, so I
assume it's some disk error and I need to run the chkdsk (or whatever it is)
from the CD. I have a problem though. I'm a college student at home on
break, with my Windows CD at school. I'm running XP Pro on my laptop, and my
parents' computer is running XP Home. Can I use that CD and run the chkdsk
thing off it and fix my problem or do I need to hunt down an XP Pro CD or do
I need to do something else entirely? Any help is much appreciated.

You can run CHKDSK from the xp cd in recovery, but one doesnt need the
xp cd,simply go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,
then type:EXIT Restart computer, utility will run on restart.

But I can't get Windows to even start... no safe mode, no command prompt, no
anything. Anything I've tried I've gotten a blue screen with the
"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" along with hex numbers I listed earlier. From what
I've understand from looking at the support stuff the only options I have
left are running the CHKDSK or reinstalling Windows, both which require a CD
that I don't have. Any other ideas?

Youcan not useyour parents CD, they need to be identical.

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at both
ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.
