Unlocked my XP 1900+ and there are some problems!

Hello.

I unlocked my XP 1900+ last night and after plugging it back into my
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, I experienced some issues I'd like your help
with/advice on.

1) I can lower the multiplier and SANDRA shows that indeed the
multiplier is 10 instead of 12, so I raised the FSB to 166. After
rebooting my system is highly unstable. It usually reboots itself
after 30 seconds or so in Windows 2000 Professional SP4. The voltage
to my CPU is 1.85 and I tried raising the voltage to my Samsung
DDR2700 (2 sticks of 256mb in dual mode) to 2.7, and then to 2.8, and
the system seemed more stable at 2.8v but still ends up crashing after
a bit.

These ram have been running at 133mhz for a long time since my CPU was
locked, so maybe they need to be burned in at 150, then 160, etc? I'm
wondering if they need to be trained up to 166mhz?

Anyway, any ideas/suggestions on why I'm seeing such instability would
be very helpful.

2) I cannot RAISE my multiplier. If I raise it to 12.5, SANDRA shows
it as 12, AND the motherboard posts the ram as running @ 120mhz even
though the BIOS is set to "User Defined" and 100% (which when raising
the multiplier the FSB was set back to 133).

Did I do something wrong in the unlocking? I connected all five L1
bridges, and that's all.

I'm also wondering if maybe the bridge connections are too close to
each other and maybe an electron can leap across and short the cpu
causing a reboot? I am going to try to clean the CPU and re-unlock it
tonight.

Please help!!!!

Thanks!!

Barry

Hardy supprising.
Assuming your processor is Barton core, it "should" be run at 133MHz (AMD
also make a 1900+ Thoroughbred b)
Easy instructions for very basic overclocking:
Increase your FSB by 1MHz
Check that it is stable
Repeat until unstable
Lower your FSB by 5MHz (I like it really stable)

No.

Hate to tell you this, but the slowest Barton is the XP2500+.

For the 1900+, it can be either the end of the Palomino line,
or the start of the ThoroughBred line - either a ThoroughBred A
or a ThoroughBred B.

The TBred-B overclocks nicely, the TBred-A does not.
Can't comment on the Palomino.

The A7N8X can not change the 5th bit of the multiplier, this means depending on the default multiplier of the processor
installed you will have a choice of multipliers of "up to 12.5x" or "13x and greater".

The best tip I can offer is go to www.memtest86.com , d/l the free mem
tester, create the boot floppy, and use this floppy to boot and test
each incremental change in your OC settings/experiments. Until you
get all the way thru the test at least once, and I recommend testing
overnight, you should NOT boot your OS and allow your system to run
unstable and potentially write bad data to your HD.

sticker on it. GENERIC Ram for the price of SAMSUNG!!

In other words, they ripped me off. Bait and switch.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER BUY FROM BUYAIB.COM!!!!!!

Check them out on resellerratings.com
