window key plus the l key

It is designed to make you think that windows has somehow improved when they
do this type of thing,

that is the L key

Gee, such help. Yes Winkey + L will lock the computer. Ctrl-alt-del
should also present this option to the user. The OP is not presented
with this ability, hence the dilema.

What version of XP?

If the Win XP style logon is being used (vs the Win 2000 style),
Ctrl+Alt+Del will bring up Task Manager instead of Lock WorkStation.

Greetings --

There at least 4 ways to lock a WinXP workstation:

1) Use the Windows Key + L hotkey.

2) You can press CTRL+ALT+DEL and then <ENTER>, once you've turned
off the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching. (This is the default
in a domain environment, as FUS is contrary to the domain security
paradigm.)

3) You can create a desktop shortcut with
"%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation" in the
target field. (It is case-sensitive, BTW.) You can then assign a
keyboard shortcut.

4) Set a password protected screensaver, and wait the allotted time
without touching the mouse or keyboard.

Greetings --

For all editions of WinXP, <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del> will present the old
Win2K-type security dialog box, with the option to lock the computer,
_only_ if the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching are disabled.
This behavior is by design.
