unlinking linked image files.

I have a database cataloging art works. It has thumbnail images created
specifically for the database. when they were added as each record was
created I clicked on the link file box when I was adding the thumbnail image.

I believe this means if I change the thumbnail.bmp file it will change in
the database. But if I moove the database I would have to tell access where
the thumbnails are otherwise I'll loose them in the database.

My question is is there a way of unlinking 500+ thumbnail files without
removing the images from within the database (assuming the images are
embedded in the database)
If not is there an easy way to tell access that the thumbnail folders have
moved (there are 7 differant folders in differant places)

I don't understand. Are the images "in" the database, or are they in some
folder outside of the .mdb file?

If you "move the database", why would that change where the images are?

When I add the thumbnail this is what I do:
right click on thumbnail box on the add artwork form,
Select insert object,
then in the box that opos up I select "create from file"
I then brows to the .bmp file that is the thumbnail I need,
then tick "[]Link"
Then click on the "ok button"
The image now appears in the form.

I believe the image is stored in the database. The database is 48.2mb and
has 389 records most of which have thumbnails (+ 105 records for props
catalog (no thumbnails))

What I am afraid of is because I ticked the "[] Link" box, if I move the
database the thumbnails will "dissapear as it will try to update but find
nothing. When I get my next machine all my graphics libraries will move to
that machine and this for office'y stuff (wp, access, email etc) will stay on
this machine.

thanks.

I'm not there, so I'm not sure what "add artwork form" you are referring to.

If you are "linking", the implication is that the image is not embedded.

My question still stands ... if you move your database, and if the images
are truly linked, not embedded, wouldn't you be able to link to the images
from the new (moved) location? And if they are embedded, changing the image
file would NOT change the embedded image.

What have you already tried?

The "add artwork" form I was referring to is a form used to enter catalog
details for a piece of artwork. It is part of a custom database system I
have been building to hold details of my drawings and digital art works.

Just did some more poking around in the help and it does appear that the
tick box means that the image is linked rather than embedded.

will have to find a way to update the link when i shift things.

Currently all my digital assets (scanned drawings, digital artwork, photos,
database thumbnails are on the same computer as the database which is also
the computer I run photoshop on as well as using MS office and typing this
reply. The database was started to catalog my artworks and is evolving (it
hasn't even a whiff of my 12Gb digital photo stuff yet). It is a home-brewed
system.

Also I currently have not yet split the database into front end/back end.

Currently it starting to look like I will have to copy the thumbnails to a
folder that is a subfolder to the database location and manually change each
link. Which means changing 389 links. The thumbnails are spread across 7 or
8 differant folders due to the way the drawings were filed when they were
scanned into the computer.

If I am going to have to do that then I may backup the database and then see
if I can use some sort of table arangement to store the location which acess
refers to to display the image (then this will not be an issue if I have to
shift things again). Only problem is the coding to make it work
Thinking of two tables
1) image id, location code, filename
2) location code, location
otherwise I will end up with 30-40 entries with the same file location per
folder of drawings and 150+(growing) for digital artwork entries

thanks
