unknown desktop icons

Occasionally, an icon with only a tildy (~) as a name will
appear on my Desktop. When I right-click on them and check
the Properties there is no real information obtainable. I
never left-click them, I delete them, fearing that they
may be virus-related. I am a moderate surfer and receive
quite a lot of spam in spite of my ISP's supposed filters.

Any ideas what the mysterious tildy icon is about? Is it
just an artefact related to XP activities or is it web-
related?

What is the Tilde (~) file that appears on Desktop?
