unknown cause of PC "Ignore Shutdown"

My Win XP (3) was humming along one minute and on the next it froze. All
efforts to regain its use, failed. I restored and looked for cause.
The result of "sc query" at the command promt brought two pages of:
Display Name Norton Unerase Protechtion
Type: 110 Win 32 Own Process
4 running
C Stoppable, Not Pausable
Ignore Shutdown Some of the other Displays:
NSvc Log , PLFlash Device Control Service, Plug Play, Pmls Driver, Police
Agent, Protective Service, Protective Storage, etc.
Prior to this problem I installed no new programs, received no up-dates
(knowingly), made no changes.
Your ideas are appreciated

Which Norton "All-in-One" suite do you have installed?

Hi Shenan,
I have "Norton System Works. Thank you for responding.
I found the reason for the shutdown via "Help" which directed me to run "sc
query", which explained the possible reason. I found drivers of a Prog. I
had deleted, still in the Registry. After deleting all traces Win XP(3) is
running again.

When XP wants to shutdown, it asks everybody (all the other stuff on
the system it knows about) if it is OK to shutdown or not.

It just takes one things to say "no - I am in the middle of something"
for shutdown not to work.

What was the prog. that had registry entries you deleted? Maybe we
know something about it.

The Progr I deleted was "Hauppauge Win TV" the drivers for sound and video
remained behind on a number of levels.
Once they were all found and deleted, XP was back to normal. Whatever that
is.
