unknown cab file required

I just installed Project 2003 and immediately ran the update routine. Office
Update tells me that it has SP1 for Project and some new junk mail filters
for Outlook 2003. I tell it to download both patches. Download proceeds with
no problem. Installation tells me that it cannot find a file called
SKU111.CAB. I search all local hard disks - no file. I search the Project
disk - no file. I search the Office 2003 disk - no file. I even searched the
Publisher 2003 disk (which is not installed). I can account for an SKU13B
and an SKU119, but no SKU111. I search all of Microsoft.com - nothing even
so much as mentions the file. I whip out my January edition of Technet -
nothing. I do find an SKU111.xml file in the Office folders, but it's
apparently something to do with various EULAs for the different versions of
Office and then a whole bunch of encrypted stuff at the bottom.

OK, Microsoft. You have successfully stumped the chump. Now could you please
tell me where to find this CAB file that I need to install these patches?
I'm assuming that it does, in fact, exist or the updates wouldn't be asking
for it.

when you install patches, office needs the installation cd - that cab is on
the install cd for one of the office programs you installed. if you stick in
the technet cd, will the installation complete?

I've checked all of the Office application CDs that I have (Project, Office
and Publisher). Since there was only one patch for Outlook and the service
pack for Project, I figured it either had to be on the Office CD (since
that's where I installed Outlook from) or on the Project CD, but no joy
there. Microsoft has traditionally been pretty good about putting up a list
of the important files for each of their systems, which is why I'm stumped.
All of the places that I would normally expect to find the file that it
wants come up dry. The other surprise was that I didn't delete the
installation files for Office, so I would have expected it to find the
necessary CAB there.

Cab files are loaded on your computer when you update your software. It is
not on any disks. It is how the computer determines what updates you've had
and what you need. You need to clean up the windows installer. Go to
Microsoft.com and look for Windows Installer Cleanup. The actual program is
msicuu.exe. Most likely you removed a program but didn't completely clean it
up and when trying to reinstall, the new program is looking for the cab
file. Load the cleanup program and remove the offending file. I just went
through this when I was having trouble removing Office and then removed it
in a roundabout way and couldn't get it to work after reinstalling.

I just ran into this type of problem when I installed a new disk drive that
I wished to make my boot disk. The utility that came with the drive was
supposed to copy the contents of my current drive to the new one and make it
bootable. The problem was that the utility failed to copy the
C:\WIndows\Installer folder, which is where you're find patch CAB files. I
couldn't update Outlook because that folder wasn't there. As soon as I
copied it over from the old disk, the update worked.
