I am in need of a freeware to read unix MBOX files ( email folders)
in Windows 98 OS.

Thanks.

Do you have any requirements other than Freeware? I know that Thunderbird
can import a Unix mbox if you have physical access to it. I think Pegasus
mail does too. Not sure about a standalone app that would do the same thing
without a full blown e-mail.

Pegasus Mail <www.pmail.com> can read the unix folder format used by
Eudora.

To do so: Make the folder window active and then on the main menu:
FOLDERS -> ADD MAILBOX TO LIST. You can simply add a directory path
(drive:\folder name) and Pegasus will mount and display any maiblox
files found there (if any). If it is a another Pegasus user account
you want to mount this way, you can instead of dir name input the
appropriate username.

From the help:

Add mailbox to list: This command allows you to add another
mailbox to your folder view. You will be prompted to enter a
directory or a username which Pegasus Mail should use to locate
the mailbox. It will then proceed to add that mailbox as a root
entry in the Folder Manager window, and will add any recognizable
mail folders from that location into that root entry. Mailboxes
added to the Folder Manager in this way are just like your own
mailbox - you can read messages, create folders, move messages
around (including between mailboxes) and so on.

All the best,

I reckon you want to read the mbx files without having to open the
mail client.

I have a util msgview.exe that opens mbx files - mail list at the left
pane and the contents on the right. Has some basic features like sort
etc.

I downloaded it a long while back so I do not have the uri for it
right now. Maybe Google will help you.

I've found it here:

Agt, AgtFind, JAPF, MsgFind, MsgView, XPgpSig

"MsgView: A little Viewer for messages stored in mbox-format
(=Agent's "UNIX Message File"-format)."

Thanks !
Meanwhile I have found some more tools for doing the task .

1.There is one msgview.exe available at

http://www.elbiah.de/tools/old/

which is a freeware ! It reads mbox mails but no saving or printing .
No attachments are read . Messages can be viewed a threads based on
the subject .
No further development also on this program.

2. Another tool is "i.scribe " which is a lite email client . It
is able to import mbox folders. The URL is www.memecode.com !

I studied this problem further and found small MBOX folders
are openable by WinZip .
WinZip opens MBOX files and shows mail messages as text files
like 0001.txt, 0002.txt etc.
These individual files can then be imported into outlook express
etc. easily.

Regarding msgview.exe , the MBOX file should be prepared first.
Msgview reads only Windows Text files not of Unix .
Therefore , Unix text files should be converted to Windows text
files to be read by msgview.
