Universal templates?

In the old days, all XLT files worked as templates--no matter where they
were saved. But in the past few releases of Excel, templates need to be
saved in that %^&*()#$% Templates directory to get them to act as templates.

Is there any practical way to allow an XLT file saved in **any** directory
to act as a template?

Thanks.

If you do File|open, and look for *.xlt, you can right click and select New. A
new workbook will be opened based on that template.

In fact, you can do this with *.xls, too. (hit cancel in the file|open dialog).

(I use xl2002 and win98 and it seems to take a long time for this to work. If I
do the same thing outside of excel (in Windows Explorer), it's a lot quicker.)
