Before doing anything are you sure your hardware meets - or exceeds - the
criteria for successful running of XP? If your system came new with 95 it
could be as much as nine years old - and I certainly wouldn't advocate
installation on a nine your old system.
The more you prepare for changing your OS the better the results will be.
You do not need to delete Windows 95 prior to running the XP setup, but if
your system originally shipped with Win 95, it is very doubtful you will be
satisfied with the end result if you can even install XP. Personally, I
would not bother upgrading a system that originally shipped with Win 9X of
any flavor. Some Win Me systems may be worthwhile. Instead, I would remove
all unnecessary software apply all the latest critical updates and use the
money you would spend for the XP upgrade, plus the updated XP software and
hardware and apply it to the best system you could afford with XP
pre-installed. Even an entry level system would probably be much more
powerful [probably 4X more powerful] than the system that would result from
your upgrade of obsolete hardware and software. You could also for very
little expense create a home network linking the old and new systems
together.
