Uninstalling Windows

I upgraded my computer to windows xp today when initially I had windows me. I believed, when I followed the instructions in the package and from the person at the help desk where I bought the upgrade, that it would format my hard drive and completely wipe out all my previous files. It did not do this, and I assumed I did it all correctly, well, apparently I did not. I tried to install windows xp on the c: drive, but it was unable to do so, so I had to install it on the D: drive, which has less space. It had said that it could not format the partition because there were many crucial files needed to install my new os. I wanted to use the FAT32 file sys however I had to use NTSF since windows me is using the FAT32. My computer is now magnificently slow due to the two operating systems and the fact the one I'm using . I would like to know how to completely erase all previous files and format my C: drive, if any of this would be possible without harming my current system, and to convert my Windows XP to the FAT32 file system, if that is possible.
