Hi Fred,

Windows 2000 does not have an uninstall feature. If you converted the file
system to NTFS, you will have to format the drive in order to install
Windows 98.

Doubt this is necessary, but better to ask in an XP group. Boot the XP
CD-Rom, delete all partition info found, then continue the install, provide
the win9x install CD-Rom when prompted for the upgrade qualification.

Greetings --

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using an
Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and
format partitions as part of the installation process.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. The Upgrade CD checks to
see if a qualifying OS is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks
you to insert the installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately,
an OEM "Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must
have a true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and
*.cab files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

When I run the XP install disk it sees %systemroot%/system32/ntdll.dll and it stops. I cannot format and get rid of windows 2000.

Boot the XP CD-Rom, delete all partition info found, then continue the
install.

It does not even let me get to the point of uninstalling partitions. I get the blue screen, copying files, starting windows... boom. I have tried delpart to get rid of partitions. It is like my hard drive is write protected by windows 2000.

If you're copying files, then you're past this point. Some other ways
include; boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk and delete all partition
information found (as long as NTFS is primary). Or boot the Windows 2000
CD-Rom or setup disks and when you get to the point, delete the existing
NTFS and or other partitions found, then abort the install. Or use a utility
named delpart. Once removed you can partition and format the drive as you
wish.

How did you use delpart? You have to boot with a DOS boot disk to use
that, like a W98 or ME boot disk.
